I want my default view setting to be details. Whether I
am viewing a folder's contents or selecting a file to
open in Word, I want the view type to be details. How do
I set this?

You cannot set the Details View as the default in a File/Open dialog box.
You can however set it as the default view in My Computer or Windows
Explorer.

Select the Details View for any folder you have open and then select
Tools/Folder Options/View tab. Select the "Apply to all folders" button and
scroll down to the "Remember each folders view settings" option and select
it.
