when taking scientific equations from my university site onto my pc, instead
of integration symbols and such, my computer shows lightning bolts, wine
glasses and empty boxes, why is this?

It sounds like you don't have whatever font is used on the original document
and your system is substituting another font.

It would appear that you don't have the correct fonts for Equation Editor
installed, and Word is substituting Wingdings or Webdings or the like.

I checked and the original document uses Symbol and TNR. Since most
computers have those two fonts, I wonder if his Equation Editor isn't
corrupt.

Grant is up and running. For whatever reason he didn't have Symbol font so
he downloaded it and he's seeing the equations properly now. And has NO
excuse for not doing well in his classes. I expect him to get A's in his
engineering classes now. ;-)

Symbol is often the missing one (having PS Symbol alone is not enough), but
EE also uses other, proprietary fonts (such as Fences and MT Extra) that
sometimes go AWOL.

FWIW, Design Science has a TechNote on this subject at
