Every time I go to File Open I have to reset the view
properties to Details, then sort alphabetically, to find
the file I want. Isn't there a way to set this as a
default?

try.........
control panel
folder options.
=======================
also try closing window using file->close instead of [x]
in corner.

And one hell of a limitation. I must say. It may drive people to use
Macs. Oh my god, did I really write that.

Go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
Download, install and run TweakUI.
When you have it running/click the + next to Explorer/click
Customizations/change: Folders to remember to: 2000/click Apply/OK.
Apparently Windows XP remembers settings for 400 folders. Once that
number is reached it won't remember any more. Changing it to 2000 works for
me.
Hope this helps. Let us know.
Wes

You can't. A workaround for that hasn't been found as of yet.

As for the TweakUI folder setting mentioned, which is a totally different
issue here, that particular setting writes the wrong value and will be
corrected soon.

Kelly;
Appreciate your reply. I have only been using Windows XP for 6 or 7
weeks. XP does not lock-up and crash all the time like 98 did. :-) Mine
has not crashed once in this entire time. And my buddy Dr. Watson informs
me that nothing eventful has happened since 21 August. But, it appears that
all kinds of things are messed up in XP.
I won't list everything wrong with mine, all one has to do is visit your
site to see all the fixes. I know, most of us would complain if we were
hung with a new rope.
Wes
P.S. Everyone, myself included, complains about Microsoft. Maybe we should
mention the good things once in a while. Naaaaaaa!!. What fun would that
be?

No problem and I hear you! :o)

Even Bill? ;-)
Read part of the stuff @ the link you provided.
These NG's would be pretty boring if we couldn't complain.
""Loads of tweaks. WHY do you HAVE to Patch??? it should JUST WORK"""
Like the guy said, "It should just work."

Wes;
