How do I see the folder system

When I try to traverse the folder system to figure it out, I will get an
access denied type thing which tells me to edit permissions .. then when I
do, Windows Explorer hangs and wants to close ..

Is there some way to have a good look at the way the folder system is layed
out in Vista 5308? Or is this just not possible? What gives with the file
system?

Thanks.

Must remember, that being an "administrator" in a User Group means very
little. If you logout and sign in with the "administrator" username, and by
default no password, you should be able to do anything and everything :o)

Remember, there's only 1 real administrator on Vista by default, and it's
username is "administrator" :o)

What exact folders can't you travers into with UAP enabled?

I'll do some digging to make sure what you are seeing is expected.

Thanks

The file system is just NTFS/Windows with some name changes. Documents and
Settings is named Users. All Users is named Public. The "My" folders don't
have "My" anymore. Open any folder and click Folders at the bottom of the
Navigation pane at left. Then you can navigate through everything. Or click
Start, choose Computer and work your way down from the top of any drive.

Also, it might help to go into File and Printer Sharing in Control Panel and
loosen things up.

Don't know if this is relevant either, but I found Explorer restarting a lot
after I connected an external hard drive to the USB port. When I
disconnected it, things seemed better. Now that drive is plugged into
another computer on the network with its root folder shared and I can get to
it no problem.

'Rebooted into safe mode, logged on as Administrator, made Administrator
owner of everything from the root on down. Ugly hack, but now I can whip up
and down the folders.

The problem for me was that many of these folders listed are not folders but
shortcuts to folders. The actual folders I could get into .. but not via the
shortcuts which flipped me the access denied bird. And when I went to the
propertiers of the shortcuts they gave me the propertyies of the folders
they were shortcuts to .. unlike regular shortcuts.

Thanks for all your replies.

Interesting, I"m on 5378 (one of the VBL_UX builds) and I'm can traverse
without even getting warnings. Use c:\windows\ and c:\windows\system32 for
a test.

Or they had the shortcut icon on them .. but when I go to their propeties
they aren't like shortcuts ..

Under C:\ there's a folder called "Documents and Settings" but it has a
little shortcut icon overlay. However, when I go to its Propeties, I get the
Properties of the folder, not the Properties of a shortcut - what gives?

Thanks

Did you upgrade over Windows XP or something? The Documents and Settings
folder has been renamed Users in Vista. Are you sure you're looking at the
right drive?

Well I will do a clean install today and recheck - maybe something happened.
I installed Vista first then later another OS on another partition. Maybe it
is the way the bloody thing "indexes" .. but I certainly did not otherwise
do anything e.g. drag a shortcut over or somesuch. Nope.

| Documents and Settings has been replaced by Users folder, so this is not a
| Windows Vista issue.
