How do I open and run this tool?? I cannot find it
anywhere. Also, is it safe for me to download and run
this tool. I have read several problems with the beta
version. Should I just wait till the regular version
comes out. The last thing I need is to test possably
bugged software on my four week old computer. But at the
same time I want to be as protected as possable.

Thank you for your responces. :0 :)

start/run, type : "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft
AntiSpyware\GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe" (including the quotes)

Sorry dude, but that entry did'nt work. I checked and
rechecked that the path had been entered correctly but
with no luck. An error message pops up saying that the
path referrs to a location that is'nt available.

If you haven't downloaded it or installed it, Windows
will not find it because it's not in your computer.

According to:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=890830

Usage information
Important Before you follow these steps, make sure you
have backed up all important data.

When the Malicious Software Removal Tool runs, it
performs the following functions. Except where noted, the
tool has the same behavior independent of what command-
line switches you use or how you download and run the
tool. Note that the tool is not actually installed on a
computer. Therefore, no entry is created for it in the
Programs folder or in Add/Remove Programs.

Notes. When you download the tool from Windows Update or
from Automatic Updates, the tool always runs in quiet
mode.
.. When you run the tool from our Web site at
http://www.microsoft.com, the tool always displays a user
interface (UI).
.. When you download the tool from the Microsoft Download
Center, the tool ordinarily displays a UI when it runs.
However, if you supply the /Q command-line switch, it
runs in quiet mode.

I copied and pasted from that article - it is worth-while
reading the whole bulletin and corresponding links. Hope
that helps...

I've seen several posts now from folks who state that they've downloaded
from WindowsUpdate, but can't find the thing.

There is an option in WindowsUpdate to show beta content, so it is possible
that this product is available via that mechanism, but I don't have a
machine without it already installed handy to check.

And I've no idea what WU would do with it once downloaded. Launch the
install would be the normal action, but I recall that there are issues with
the switches not working correctly, maybe--so maybe there's a glitch.

Anybody seen this on WU and actually downloaded and installed that way?

The zap the malware push is confusing people.
Chazz (above my prior post in this thread) thinks we're
discussing the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

v5 WU has consistently not offered me MAS.
When I tried to look at WUcat I found that I'd
have to accept the v4 activeX, which I declined,
thinking it might displace the v5, which works.

In case Joe is keeping an eye on this thread, I think
Ad-Aware SE Personal would do him for starters:

I had occasion to work on a brand new XP Pro laptop this afternoon, and I
went and checked off the beta software flag in Windows Update, but was not
offered this product.

I didn't give it a lot of time, because I wanted to put it on from the
beginning, but I suspect that we're talking about the Malicious Software
Removal tool, too.

That runs silently when downloaded from WU or AU, but leaves a log file
behind in %windows%\debug\ mrt.log, I think.

mrt.log, correct. They have scheduled it for once a month.
Thanks for motivating me to visit WU. I found 3 patches
as well as the malice remover, which does an apoptosis
on itself when it finishes its silent run.

I like the MRT. I think the confusion we've seen this month won't happen
again next month. I also think that having to assent to the EULA adds to
the impression that something big, with a gui, must be coming--wish that
wasn't necessary.
