Hello all-
i recently upgraded to vista (from xp), and i thought during the back up i
could recover my contact list from the 'windows.old' folder. However, I
cannot seem to find the location of my contacts. Any help will greatly be
appreciated.

So you did an in place upgrade of an entire operating system? You are very
brave. I would never expect an in place upgrade of an entire OS to work.
So what version of Outlook are you using? Why would you expect its data to
be in windows.old instead of where it belongs? --

Yes- i suppose 'brave' would be one word for it. I'm sure I have an idea of
what other words that may come to mind when doing an in place upgrade. I am
using Outlook 2003, and since '03 didn't pick up the contacts, I guessed that
the file would be located elsewhere. I had hoped you would respond, you seem
to have the most solid advice through the forum. As far as the in place
upgrade, so far my contacts seem to be the only issue i've run into so far.

Well as a firm non-believer in in place upgrades, I have no idea what
Vista's routine has done with your data file, but I doubt it would be in
windows.old. I would suspect that Vista would attempt to move it to its new
default location. You should be able to find that information here:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/vistaupgrade.htm
Outlook cannot survive an upgrade of either Office or an operating system
until you create a new Outlook profile from scratch and connect it properly
to your data file. Did you by chance make backups of your data before
attempting this upgrade? All the troubleshooting steps you'd need should be
on the site posted above.
