I recently lost us of my computer due to a freak accidental breakage of the
"neutral" line of the home electricity. I removed the hard drive and placed
it in an external hard drive case. I purchase a new Computer with Windows
Vista and Outlook 2007. I can find the personal data files on the old hard
drive but Outlook 2007 won't open them. A window opens and tells me I am not
authorized to open them. Can anyone help me?

How did you copy and transport these data files? Which "files" did you copy
(there should only be one). How are you trying to open them?

I attempted to use Vista's "Transfer files and settings" by transfering data
from my old hard drive which is now in a external case. This doesn't seem to
be working. I can access what I think are the Outlook files by opening up
the files on my old hard drive.

I read your response to Indian Queen, and tried to open pst from the
external hard drive files. I get a window which tells me that file access is
denied, you do not have permission to access.... How can I tell Outlook that
I am the owner of those files?

Is the file marked Read Only? If yes, then remove that indicator and try again.

Vista's utility does not work for Outlook. You need to use one of the
supported methods for data transfer. Copy your Outlook data file to your
Vista hard drive. Make sure it acquired no read only property in the
transfer. Then open said file in Outlook: File > Open > Outlook data file.

Russ,

Thanks SO MUCH for the information you posted. I was at wit's end trying to
recover Outlook.pst from a DVD after doing an XP reinstall. I copied the
file to my hard drive, and was then able to recover it. Whew!

Thought I had lost hundreds of Contacts, appointments, and important
e-mails. Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge with others.
