Hi, I'm new to computers and didn't realise that removing a windows theme
could be such a pain. I have managed to reset all settings back to standard
but cannot get rid of the logon screen image. I'm at my wit's end - please
help.

To be more specific - I want to see the standard logon screen when booting up
but cannot remove the custom image I have. Thanks.

The Login Screen can be changed; but because you are new to computers I'll
suggest the best way to give you the help is to reinstall the windows using
the disks that came with your computer.

I'm quite capable of following detailed instructions to remove such images
from the registry etc. I already did this to get the standard boot screen
back using advice from another forum. Please feel free to tell me how to do
this. If not, my Dell PC didn't come with a backup win xp disk (the software
was pre-installed), is there another way of re-installing windows?

You wrote that you were new to computing... Ok, Dell does ship the XP
program with the unit. It is partitioned on your Hard Drive. I have disks,
so How to get to your Installation of XP will be sketchy at best for me. Try
to go to Add/Remove Program and click Add/Remove Windows Components. You may
find the Installation of XP there. If not, go to your help menu.
If I knew that you were computer savy, I could have given you the tools to
modify your Login Screen.

I went into Add/Remove Windows components as you suggested but this is
exactly what it says on the tin - Windows components, no sign of the Windows
operating system itself. If I can locate this partition, and reinstall
windows, will all the data (files and folders) held within windows explorer
be lost/overwritten?

Unless XP is an upgrade on top of Win 98 or something similar, and the
former OS was 'saved' during the upgrade, XP will never be seen in
Add/Remove programs as an un-installable item..

If you attempt a re-install using the Dell recovery procedure, all files
will be lost and/or overwritten.. there is no repair facility on customised
XP recovery media that would enable you to preserve your files..

Re. your problem, did you get the theme from within XP, or is it something
obtained from another source?.. if obtained from another source, have you
contacted the authors re. removing that last vestiges of the unwanted theme?

What is so bad about the present logon screen?.. what do you see that you
don't want?.. does it compromise the way that the computer logs in?.. does
it prevent you logging in?

You have to understand that we can't see what you see..

There is nothing 'so bad' about the screen, I simply don't like it and don't
like the fact that I can't change it. By the way, I didn't get it from within
XP it was downloaded from ThemeXP.com - I will contact somebody from that web
site.
