How can I repair/reinstall Microsoft XP Professional with Frontpage without
use of the XP cd? I actually do have the disc but, unfortunately, my cd
drive is broken.
I believe I inadvertently deleted it--or some aspect of the
program--rendering all my Word/Office docs unopenable. Any information would
be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Are you trying to repair Frontpage or MS Office Professional?

Office Pro never came "with" Frontpage (yes, FP is an "office family"
product but it has never been part of the actual Office suite(s) to my best
knowledge - except Office 2000 Premium, not sure there's any equivalent in
the Office XP or 2003 releases).

Anyway, you'll need the Office Pro CD to carry out any reinstall/repair of
the software if the installation files are not located on your hard drive.
Try launching the "Repair" routine from the Help menu of Word or other
office program, you'll soon see if you need the CD or not, because it will
ask for it.

Can you actually start word or excel (etc?). If not then there should be a
way to start the Repair tool from the Start Menu > and which ever folder
houses the shortcuts to the Office programs (something like "Microsoft
Office/Office Tools" or similar).

Seeing you'll more than likely need your CD drive for other future uses, I'd
say this is a good time to get a new one.

As I said, "to my knowledge....there's no equivalent of Office 2000
Premium" - thanks for the advice. This version obviously was never sold in
the mainstream retail outlets in Australia - none near me anyway.

Anyway, many members have stated on this group that Frontpage is (generally)
a stand alone product.

Depending on the version of FP and Office ;-)

Thank you for the advice. Looks like I will have to buy a new CD drive--just
glad I didn't waste anymore time trying to circumvent that. Thanks again!

I'll confirm that. FRONTPG.EXE is found in the OFFICE1.CAB
file.

Microsoft's dllhelp database however tends to disagree...

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&alpha=FRONTPG.EXE&S=1&x=4&y=13

Office 2000 Professional comes with FRONTPG.EXE? No mention
of Office 2000 Premium there at all. Who's in charge of dllhelp any-
ways? Microsoft?
http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/default.aspx?l=55&fid=113542

unless it's possibly case-sensitive (like a unix server?).

Things that make you say, hmmm.

Which version of FP?
Most likely it is the same version that Windows installs under:
C:\Program Files\microsoft frontpage\version3.0\bin
which is also on all Office CD prior to Office 2003

Office XP Professional with FrontPage

The files in C:\Program Files\microsoft frontpage\version3.0\bin
seem to be the FrontPage 98 server side extensions. Not sure
which app installed those... but according to the Windows XP
sfcfiles.dll... the following files tend to be protected operating
system files and originally get installed by Windows XP (Pro)...

"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\servsupp\fp4amsft.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\servsupp\fp4anscp.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\servsupp\fp4apws.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\fp4areg.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\fp4atxt.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bots\vinavbar\fp4avnb.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\fp4avss.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\servsupp\fp4awebs.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\fp4awel.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft FrontPage\version3.0\bin\fp98sadm.exe", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft FrontPage\version3.0\bin\fp98swin.exe", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\_vti_bin\fpcount.exe", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\fpexedll.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\fpmmc.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\1033\fpmmcsat.dll", "fp40ext.inf", ""
"%commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\fpremadm.exe", "fp40ext.inf", ""

Also, with the XP OS (original pre SP1 version), those files are
located inside the following cab file on the XP Professional CD.
Name: I386\FP40EXT.CAB
Size: 1,759Kb
Decompressed Size: 4,079Kb
82 files in archive:

The FRONTPG.EXE inside the bin folder doesn't exist. The links
to the dllhelp database provided by Microsoft and maintained by
Microsoft only lists two different versions of FRONTPG.EXE (?).

Hope this helps.
