How do I remove write protection from folder?

My write protection seems to be activated on all folders. The box where the
check is supposed to be is blackened and when I click to remove it, it goes
away. However when I try to remove the folder an error pops up and when I
bring up the properties again it shows the box is blackened again.
I don't seem to have a problem with files, it only seems to be the folders.

All folders on everybody's XP computers have the write protection box set.
There is nothing here to fix; most likely the bit that enables write
protection on files is used for something else on folders.

Hi,

Are you referring to "read only"? If so, that is normal on a folder and that
attribute is ignored by the system. The attribute is only applicable to
files.

You are correct. It is the Read Only box.
Well all I want to do is delete a folder, how do I do that? It refuses to
delete.

Hi,

The "read only" attribute has nothing to do with an inability to delete a
folder. What, specifically, happens when you try to delete it? Normally, a
refusal to delete means either the use has insufficient privileges or that a
file in the folder is in use.

When I try to delete the folder (right click, select delete) I receive an
error:

"Error Deleting File or Folder"

and the details list:

"..Cannot delete "(the name of the folder)" It is being used by another
person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.."

Now the folder is empty and verified by enabling to view hidden folders.

It is in "My Documents" and lists as follows:
C:\Documents and Settings\Allen\My Documents\bible\The Bible is God's Word

I also noticed that I can't change the name of the folder either.

Hi,

Start/run cmd

From the prompt, run:

RD /s /q %userprofile%\My Documents\Bible\The Bible is God's Word

Assuming that last part is the actual folder name.

Thx Unknown P;
I downloaded the program and ran it. It showed that msn messenger was
locking it. I closed messenger and it still would not release. I reboot the
computer and closed messenger upon startup and ran the "wholockedme" and it
showed that it encountered an error an had to close. I attempted to delete
the folder and sure enough it deleted.
I still don't know why messenger had it locked out, but I think the reboot
fixed it. before the reboot I checked the running processes but it didn't
show it active.
Anyway, it's corrected, thank you all for your help, all of you and your
assistance have been valuable.
thank you

I seem to have that problem quite a bit...except I believed it was the MSN
Desktop Search thingy blocking it. I removed it and installed Google
Desktop Search and the problem disappeared straight away. Google is way
better anyway in my opinion.
