How do I remove the CPU off of the Motherboard without damaging it??

I have a custom built PC, and I'm splitting it up and selling on the parts. The CPU seems to be stuck to the m/b. (I paid someone to put the PC togther for me)

What's the best way of removing it?

have you tryed lifting the small silver lever on the side of the socket?

It you lift that and it still wont come away without force it seems to me it's been overclocked without sufficient cooling and the CPU has melted to the socket. If this has happened then its knackered

Hi

I've lifted the silver lever so that it's at 90 degree angle to the m/b, but the CPU is stuck. I assume it's only the silver square metal that needs to be removed, not the green plastic it is resting on?

The chip fan on the m/b has been acting up, which is why I'm returning the m/b back to the manufacturer. Do you think that the malfunctioning of the m/b has also fried the CPU?? I'm thinking of asking for a new CPU replacement as well if this is the case.

Thanks for the advice

the silver bit is the heat spreader, the green bit is part of the cpu as well

Your whole CPU/Processor looks like this:

Yeah the silver bit is part or the CPU as shown, sorta another heatsink the green bit is simply the circuit board the DIE is fixed to.

Can you see any warping or damage around the Circuit board?
Alternatively any blackening or discolouration of the actual motherboard underneath when you remove it?

The CPU should simply lift out after lever is in the vertical position. If not then it does look like the Chip has been damaged due to over heating and in turn melted the socket it fits into.

Nah never worn one myself I just make sure lead is plugged in to socket and connected but PSU is swtiched off then touch case. Simple and sufficient
