I upgraded to windows xp professional (sp2) recently, but i want to install
it on another harddrive. My old harddrive came with windows 98 SE
pre-installed and i purchased xp as an upgrade. How do i install onto my new
harddrive without the original 98 SE cd-rom?

Without a CD to prove you have upgrade rights - you don't. (assuming you
mean you purchased a Windows XP Upgrade version...)

Copy the 98 SE installation onto your new hard disc first. XP should then
upgrade from there (assuming that your XP pro is the version that allows
upgrade from 98 SE).

1. Remove XP from the original hard drive.

2. Buy an inexpensive copy of Windows 98 someplace like eBay. This
will qualify you to use the XP upgrade on the new drive. Do a clean
installation by booting from the XP CD, then insert the Windows 98 CD
as proof of ownership when prompted to do so.

Exactly what I tried but see my post about Install Loop. It booted
again from the CD after asking for the verification disk and accepting
it. It does not set whatever makes it boot from Hard Drive instead,
even if I take the CD out of the drive.
So you booted from XP.
It asks for a valid previous version and you then put the 98 CD in the
same drive and said search.
It should find and validate it.
Then you put the XP cd back in and it continues installing.

Right?
