How do I prevent Outlook from auto-formating the phone numbers from say,
+41 (321)12345-67890 to simply 1234567890?

You can't. Masking of phone numbers is hard coded. All you can do is turn
off the option to automatically add the country code to local numbers.

My undestanding is that a simple comma in front of the number may be a very
handy alternative?! " ,1234567890 " I did try it and it does work. Thanks.

Right, but the extra characters needed to prevent the masking still alter
the numbers in such a way that users still can't do what they need when
synchronizing with other data sources such as cell phones.

Motorola V3 syncronized perfectelly with Outlook by ignoring the comma before
the digits. It seems that modern phone technology is very clever this days.
