I am getting advertising pop-ups on my screen. These are
not associated with a web site. I think that they are from
chat or instant messaging or something like that. I want
to prevent outside users from doing this. How do I do it ?

Thanks

Conrad

You've probably got some sort of spyware program. Annoying as heck, but
fixable. Check all the usual places (registry, startup folder, etc.) for
suspicious programs. You can also just searcg google for spyware killers -
try http://www.spychecker.com/

Thats the messenger service.

Either install a firewall which is the best idea , or disable the service
(services.msc from a command prompt) which will do the trick but isn't as
secure

.
A good free popup killer is Popup Manager. You can get
it here: http://www.endpopups.com/

If these are "Messenger Service Popups", try this:
Steve Gibson's Shoot the Messenger
http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

You should also download and run Adaware (free version)
from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ (Make sure you use
Webupdate before scanning to ensure you have the latest
ref file.)
It detects and safely removes dataminers, tracking
cookies, dialers, BHO's and other objects from your
computer. This link will help you configure AAW for your
first scan: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?

If you have any questions, their forums are here:

Is it a popup, IE window, or is it a window that says "Messenger" in the
title bar?

If it says "Messenger" then it is the network broadcast service. Simply go
into your control panel, services, and stop the Messenger service. You may
also want to disable it while you are there. If you are a home user this
will probably have very little impact, if any, on the operation of your
workstation. If you are in a LAN environment the network administrator may
use this service to let you know when things are happening, like the server
going down, etc... In this case a firewall would be your best bet, however
you might want to consider replacing the network administrator if he/she
either have your network set up without a firewall, or they are not blocking
these type of inbound traffic. ;o)
