How do I preserve the alignment of my bulleted points?

I am having major issues with my bulleted points all of a sudden, and I don't
know why. First of all, I am not able to have different margins within one
text box (i.e. for outline items of different levels) and even when I just
set up one margin, when I close and reopen my presentation, the indents of my
bulleted points shift so they are no longer aligned. This has been happening
for about a week.

There's a bug where the formatting from the wrong master slide gets applied
to your slide, and it can create these types of issues.

Microsoft's suggestion is to reorder the slide masters so that the master
for the problem slide appears first in the list, but I think this just
introduces potential for other slides to be messed up.

So what I do is format the placeholder the way I want it then copy and paste
it on the slide. Delete the original. This turns the placeholder into a
regular textbox, divorced from the slide master -- which means it shouldn't
reformat.

As far as setting different margins, make sure the ruler is turned on (View
| Ruler) and then press Ctrl while dragging the indent markers into their
appropriate places.
