How do I perform a system backup

about where to put the backup:
a.. Your computer's hard disk. The ideal backup location is a separate
partition from the one you're backing up. If your hard disk is partitioned
into drive C and drive D and your data is on drive C, you can safely back up
to drive D.

excuse me, but is he nuts?

Yeah, well, it's not really the ideal location, but probably the best
for most people that only have one HDD. A better solution would be to
have a 2nd HDD just for backups and archives - that's what I do. If a
single HDD fails it's likely that all partitions will fail, not just
one, so it's best to have the backup on another HDD.

The next step should be to burn any HDD backup onto CDR so it can be
taken to a safe place away from the computer, just in case the
computer/house goes up in flames....Who said I was paranoid????

He does cover that by suggesting an external HDD or network drive
option, so on the whole his advice is pretty good.

Open the Help and Support Center, and search for: copy files and folders to
a CD.

Or use the third-party CD burning software, if any, that came with your
computer.

If you want to copy everything, you will need 3rd party software that
will split a large backup or image file into CD sized chunks, as XP
native burning software can only copy to a single CD, and my system
backup takes 10 CD's). I recommend using Norton Ghost 2003 or later.
It will burn directly to CD's if you want, bypassing the HDD copy -
but I like to have a backup immediately available on my system as well
as on CD - I have a 2nd HDD just to hold backups.

Smaller data backups that will fit on one CD can be done using XP's
inbuilt burning capability - go to Help and Support on your start
menu.

Jim I dont really suggest CDs for real backup. Only if the data you are
backing up will fit into a few CDs, other wise you should consider
(cheapest first)

1. an external harddrive (there are a few cheap one button touch backup out
there)
2. another harddrive the same size and prefereably a RAID card so you dont
have to do it manually all the time
3. a tape backup
