i want to set up a network over my LAN connection here at
college, so that I can share my printer with my
roommate. Also, we want to share files over this
network, but we dont want anyone else on the College's
LAN network to be able to access ours without a password.
How do I do this? I was able to set up a network with
the wizard, and we are now sharing files and the printer,
but its dangerously open to other users on the College's
network.... How do i change this, and set up a password
access rule?

You could always setup a router with NAT and Firewall support. It would
connect to your college lan access point, just like it was a stanard dsl
line. The each of your computer would hook into this. This way tou are
"hidden" behind a hardware firewall.

I'd consult with the network people at your college to see what they
suggest.

Here are two possibilities that work in simple home networks using
workgroups:

1. If your computers have XP Professional, you can disable simple file
sharing and set up permissions to allow access only by each others'
user names. This web page has details:

Windows XP Professional File Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm

2. Leave simple file sharing enabled (which is the only configuration
that XP Home Edition has) and define a password for the Guest account.
Only someone who knows the password will be able to access your
computer:

a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK.
c. Under "Users for this computer", click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password, enter a password, and click OK.
