How do I NOT show deleted mail in the preview window?

Is it possible to have Windows Mail NOT show deleted mail in the preview
window, without making all the other folders not show mail in the preview
window?
 
No. You either have the Preview pane or you don't.
However, you can customize the toolbar to add a Preview button,
which at least allows you to switch quickly between the two layouts.
