I have used a .pst calendar for years, but we now have a company
Exchange Server. How do I move my Calendar to the Exchange Server
and then reset the default calendar to point to the Exchange Server
Calendar? Or maybe the better questions would be. How do I convert
all the .pst file information: Contacts; Calendar, etc to the
Exchange Server?
First, make Exchange your delivery location. For OL 2002/2003 that would be
Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next. At the bottom left is a "Deliver new e-mail to
the following location" drop-down. Change this drop-down to indicate your
Exchange server. Click Finish. Stop and restart Outlook. You'll now see
the Exchange server mailbox as your Outlook Today set of folders. You'll
also see "Personal Folders" as well in the Folder List view. If you have
folders in your PST that are NOT the default folders - i.e., ones you
created yourself - and you wish to house them on the Exchange server, just
drag-and-drop the folders from the "Personal Folders" section to the
"Outlook Today" (or "Mailbox - your name" or "Your name") label. Outlook
will move the folder. If you'd rather make a copy instead of move,
right-click-drag-and-drop and choose Copy. Otherwise, you can just leave
them in the Personal Folders tree.
When you're done with the non-default folders, you'll need to move the
default folder contents, since you can't copy the folders themselves
(Exchange will already have created them for you). Open, say, the Personal
Folders' Calendar, and select a table view like "By Category". Select the
first entry by clicking it once and then select all your items with CTRL-A.
Now click Edit>Copy to Folder (or right-click the selection and drag it),
specifying the Calendar on the Exchange server as the destination. This
will place everything in your old calendar on Exchange's calendar. Do this
with all of the default folders from your old Personal Folders file.
And what is the best practice for using email on
both an Office PC and a laptop.
My opinion is Offline folders for Outlook 2002 and earlier and cached
Exchange mode for Outlook 2003. Others may differ.
