Using Powerpoint 2003 How can I make a slide appear 'question of sport'
style, in bits or fading in very slowly, for an audience of children to guess
what the picture is?

MusicMaker

For our american audience...."A question of sport" is a game show...about ... well 'sport'....In one particular round
they have a picture of a famous (sports) person. Which is gradually revealed for the contestants to guess.

See this jigsaw reveal game (Is that what you are after)?

There are two methods.

1) Break the picture into several small chunks using a graphics editor (or
insert picture several times and use cropping within PowerPoint). Arrange
these so the edges line up. Animate "pieces" to appear one after another.

2) Insert whole picture. Use masking shapes that are filled with
'background' that fade out (exit animation) to reveal the full picture.

Personally, I'd recommend the second method. It allows you to change the
main picture easily without having to redo all the pieces each time, should
you want to use the effect again. Here's how I would do the reveal.

1) On a slide, make a background color or color gradient. Pictures would be
confusing, so avoid a busy or distracting background.

2) Insert your picture to be revealed. Size to fit the slide

3) Insert a rectangle autoshape over the picture. Click on Format |
Autoshape... | {tab}Colors and lines | {pulldown} Fill: Color | and select
Background (from the bottom of the pulldown list). Then, on the same dialog
box, select {pulldown} Line: Color | and select None. OK out of the box.

4) Apply an exit animation to the rectangle. Select the rectangle. Then
click on Slide Show | Custom Animation (note: the task panel will open) |
{button} Add Effect | Exit | and select Fade (or whatever you fancy) from
the list. The animation will appear on the list in the Task Pane. Click on
it and use the small pulldown on the right side of the animation name to
select 'Timing'. In the dialog box, change the Start: to After Previous and
the Delay: to 0.5 second and the Speed: to Medium. OK out of the dialog
box.

5) Duplicate the masking box. Select the rectangle you have just created.
It should look like a piece of the picture is missing where ever the box is.
When selected, copy the shape (using Ctl-C) and paste (Ctl-V). Move the new
shape to an uncovered part of the picture and repeat.

Now, when the slide is shown, the shapes will, one after another, fade out
to reveal the picture. Does this help?
