I want to make a network connection between a Desktop
computer running windows 98 S/E and a laptop running XP
professional. I want to transfer files from the laptop
and then later to transfer them back. I'm connecting VIA
a paralelle direct connection Cable, i don't have an
ether net card in the laptop so thats out of the
question.
I can manage to get the two computers to connect and
aknowledge eachother as being connected, i just need to
know how to access the hard drive for both from the
remote computers. I'd like to be able to see and access
the hardrive and tranfer the files from the laptop.

if anyone knows how to do this, i'd appreciate any help
thank you,
ciao

i was just wondering how to access the information on the
remote hardrive and does it matter that there are two
different OS in play?

in order to transfer files you need to enable sharing on one of the machines and then share a hard drive

either on the laptop or the win98 machine. if you want to transfer files from the laptop you would need to share the whole drive/drives that contain the material

it would be easier to create a folder on the destination machine, then share it and enable "other users to modify files" then just look it up in the laptops network places and drag and drop to that

do a search for sharing in the help files on 98 as well as help and support in win xp

Greetings --

On the WinXP PC, create local user account(s), with password(s),
that have the desired access privileges to the desired shares. Log on
to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will be able to
access the designated shares, provided your network is configured
properly. Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in firewall is disabled
on the internal LAN connection.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

i still can't seem to be able to search for and see
shared folders, the compatibility between Windows 98 S/E
and XP is proving to be dificult to use,

i was just wondering if when i have the network connected
between the two computers that it may be possible to
transfer files in an easier way?

Do you have usernames and passwords set the same on BOTH computers?
