How do I lock photos to keep visitors from copying and pasting?

It's not possible. When someone views your photo over the web, a copy of it
has already been downloaded to his computer. Your best bet is probably
watermarking the images.

I can think of a half-dozen methods for getting at images and source code
which are not mentioned in any of these articles.

IMHO, the first article listed is not doing anyone any favors. As telling
ignorant people how to disable right-click is going to give them the
knowledge of how to perform this asinine task, it implies that there might
be some good reason for doing so. Can you imagine a doctor telling his
patient "Hoodia does nothing for you, but in case you want some, I'll give
you a bottle?" Talk about mixed signals!

In fact, all of the evidence is in favor of *not* doing so. Consider the
following:

1. Disabling right-click disables *all* of the context menu for the right
mouse button. This is irritating to most people. It drives traffic away from
a web site.
2. Disabling right-click announces to the world that the author knows almost
nothing about HTML, HTTTP, browsers, or the WWW. This drives traffic away
from a web site.
3. Irritating people and advertising one's ignorance are counter-productive
to the purpose of any web site.

Kevin did you read it?

Harsh Reality
Despite what anybody tells you - it is IMPOSSIBLE to stop people viewing
your code or copying your pictures

To save you looking any further - it can't be done. But if you want to know
the reasons why, and you want to try 'something' to make it just a little
more difficult for people to steal your stuff, please read further on this
site

And by the way, don't bother telling me that there are a number of other
ways to defeat the scripts and tricks here - I already know that. Don't
bother telling me that browser X allows you to view sources without
trouble - I already know that. The whole point of this web site is to
reinforce the idea that you can't stop it, so you might as well get used to
the idea.

But what if I have really important stuff?
In that case, don't put it on a web site. You can't stop people from copying
it.

Isn't there anything that can be done? Basically, no. The best that you can
do is make it difficult for people to copy your pictures or copy your code.

Did you read my response? If "the best thing you can do" is something that
is harmful, how can it be "the best thing?"

As Hippocrates, once said "First, do no harm."

Well, as long as it stops there, I'm fine with it! :-D

Instead of displaying the photo, you insert directions telling them where
they can go to see what would have been there. Then you just need to make
sure somebody guards the place and doesn't allow photos to be taken, or
pictures to be drawn. Probably best if you don't let people linger long
enough to create a good mental picture that might help them to recreate it
later.

Either that or invent a virus that affects every single computer and
disables any and all screen capture capabilities. Because no matter what
screwy sort of code you try to write in, whatever's displayed on the screen
can be captured as a bitmap. Period.

You don't need screen capture. It's in the browser cache already...

I think Kevin knows that, and isn't arguing otherwise. His point is that you
are providing links to sites that demonstrate harmful techniques which have
no value.
