I have Windows XP.

How do I know whether the colors I'm seeing on my monitor are "true
colors"...is there any "standard" against which I can check?

Try this: http://www.easyrgb.com/calibrate.php It's simple, fast and
easy and it will show you how close your monitor is.

Or search the internet for "Monitor Color Calibration". You need a good
quality graphics monitor and a calibration tool if you want precise
color rendition.

Yes - use a monitor test card ;-)

Yeah, its fast and easy and it gives you an idea how well your monitor
renders colours. My monitor passes ok too, I have a LaCie CRT, I would
expect that it has a fairly good colour fidelity.
