i have an hp officejet k60. it seems that after i ignore the repeated
"ink out soon" warnings for the black ink and it actually does run
out, the machine switches over and keeps printing black by mixing the
colors from the more expensive color cartridge. i have my printer
software set to print by default in black and white only. how do i
know when my black ink is really out? i don't want to waste the last
part of the cartridge.

I'm not familiar with this model, but my sister has an older 930 and
you can easily take out the cartridge and just shake it lightly to
detect any liquid (ink) sloshing around.

-Taliesyn (always best shaken before use ;-)

Take it out and dab the head carefully onto layers of tissue. The ink will
wick into the tissue quite freely if there's any left.
