how do I know if I need 2.5 or 3.5'' HD enclosure?

hi,

wich enclosure do I need to use for a seagate barracuda ATA II hard
disk? I am puzzled as to where the measure of 2.5" or 3.5" come from.

Its basically the diameter of the platter. The drive is a bit wider, 4" in this case.

That's right. In general, 3.5" drives are used in desktops
while 2.5" types are used in laptops.
