How do I kill these files

On a partition where normally only data such as photo's and documents are kept,
I decided to keep some newly acquried programs. Recently I decided to put those
program on a CD and free the space.

Not so. An empty folder called Java refuses to be deleted or copied and so worse
still do do two files called txpeng473.exe and txpeng473.txt. I have been in dos
window and tried to delete there and also use a kill.com which I generated in my
days as an assembly programmer - never failed before.

This time it failed big as it says it cannot find the file. I have placed Kill
in the folder where the programs are and therefore have no trouble with path's.
Naturally I have done all the ususal such as right click for properties and
attrib in dos. Incidentally dos attrib finds the programs and tells me they are
to be archived but that is all.
I cannot use safe mode as I have an Intel board with a video card and therefore
get no display in safe mode -

I am sorry to bother with such a fundamental problems but I am sure such files
are not there for the good of mankind so what can I do to delete them, please

Looks like here's what it is.

To delete you can try from the RC

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks. At
the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows 2000
installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

Then you can try deleting from the recovery console. First you'll need to;
Control Panel|Admin Tools|Local Security Policy Recovery console:
"Allow floppy copy and access to all drives/folders" set to enabled

Then from the recovery console command line;
SET allowallpaths = TRUE

to gain access to all folders and try deleting from here.

I somehow just could not get there at all. Realized that it was an old version
of TextPad causing that so I ended up with copying all files from E: to a folder
on F: . Naturally the files that would not copy were ctrl/clicked off and not
copied. The the task of returning files to E: was a 7 minute job.
Thanks anyway. I keep your comments to see if at some time I can get to the

Don't know what this means. Can you elaborate?

I just cannot find "Allow floppy copy and access to all drives/folders" in any
parts of the tree presented on my computer.

I get Accounts, Local, Public and IP and expanding any of those do not show
anything to do with floppy.

Incidentally I did operate as administrator

Sorry to be a nuisance.

PS I have deleted the files by the method described and also got rid of the
TextPad as I do not need it anymore. I was useful for writing C and C++ stuff.
You could make your mistakes a lot faster :-)

Yes that is no trouble at all.

You've got latitude and longitude mixed up :-)
Afraid not. We have been through that a number of times. You have them mixed up
as this sig will show

Borge in Perth, Australia

Then you should find "Allow floppy copy and access to all drives/folders" in
the right-hand pane list.

Afraid not. You have your latitude and longitude labels mixed up, not your
coordinates. See this link for help in understanding these concepts:

It's in Local Policies | Security Options
Recovery Console: Allow floppy copy and access to all drives and all folders

yes, yes, yes, I finally got it. There were some entries above saying "allow"
and in alpha order that was all there was.

So I have indeed learnt something. As I get into some of the intricacies I get
more respect for windows as time goes by.

Thanks for your patience.

A longitude of -31 (or 31 degrees west) would put you on a great
circle through the Atlantic Ocean. A latitude of greater than 90
degrees doesn't exist. The north pole is +90 deg and the south
pole is -90 deg.
Have a look at an atlas.

How about using internet for that

http://www.travelpost.com/PO/Australia/Western_Australia/Perth/4941031
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=196

As you see they both tell me that I am right. As I said I have been through it
quite a few times - I don't mind. I could of course get the opinion of son
number 3 who has a skippers ticket - we really have to take his word for it.

I don't see how those sites tell you that you're right. The first says
Latitude -31.93333
Longitude 115.83333

The second says
Latitude: 31 deg. 58' South
Longitude: 115 deg. 49' East

Both tell me that the labels in your sig are reversed.

Both urls show that you are wrong :-)

Good thinking.
and his answer was
"According to Starfriend, Perth is at:
latitude: 31S57'00, longitude: 115E51'00"

So the -31 or 31 south really is the same thing. Incidentally starfriend is a
program coming on stream shortly. All to do with predicting your future and
anybody else's who is interested.

B.Pedersen Latitude -31,48.21 Longitude115,47.40 Time=GMT+8.00
If you are curious look here http://www.mapquest.com/maps/latlong.adp

Sure - but in your sig you have:
Long. -31,48.21 Lat. 115,47.40

If you change it to
Lat. -31,48.21 Long. 115,47.40

all will be well :-)
