I keep trying to insert text within sentences and every time I do, it deletes
the following text so that I have to rewrite the rest of the sentence and/or
work that comes after the insertion. What do I need to do to change this? I
would like to insert what I need and only delete something by using the
delete button. Please help! My operating system is Vista and the problem is
showing up in Word as well as in email. I haven't tried any other programs
yet.

You are in Overtype mode. The Insert key usually toggles between Insert and
Overtype modes. Does it work for you?

If not, then right-click the status bar (assuming Office 2007), and ensure
that Overtype is checked. Then click Overtype in the status bar to toggle
back into Insert mode.
