how do I import lost outlook data file

Hi,

In cleaning up my labtop and re-installing the backup all outlook files were
lost.
By means of a recovery program we did find the outlook data file but now it
seems impossible to use it because it is no longer recognized as a 'personal
folders file'.
Is there any solution to restore that recovered outlook data file to its
original format of .pst?
