Hi,

All the time, I leave my computer on, therefore I always leave my
Outlook 2003 on. Is there software out there for hot backup of
Outlook data even while it's running?

Thanks in advance,

Well, what you could do - it might take a couple of minutes depending on the
amount of items you have in your Exchange folder/PST - is using the "Export"
function of Outlook. When Outlook asks for the format it should export to,
then choose Personal Folder. Then everything you have selected, will be
saved to that PST. As a side-effect, you won't be able to do anything else
in Outlook for that time (but other application will still function, maybe
somewhat slower).

I don't know exactly, how this is being done, but I'm sure that it is not
too difficult, to program a macro, which does this job on a regular basis.
You might program the macro to run at midnight (when you're supposedly not
working :))

There's a "backup" add-in for Outlook available from MS Office website -
lets you do backups at any time and will also remind you at set intervals if
you wish.

Thank you for the replies,

Bryan, I guess you haven't tried it yet. :)

This backup tool from MS says, "Outlook needs to exit before it can
backup your Personal Folder file(s). Outlook will automatically
backup your file(s) the next time you exit the program."

So this is not 'hot backup'. Hot backup means that I don't need to
shutdown Outlook. God, five days would have passed before I would do
this - particularly because I use the 'Do not deliver before' feature
when sending messages - I often have six postdated messages in my
Outbox. (:

At the least, I need something that shutdowns Outlook five minutes
before my usual backup process runs, and then starts Outlook after an
hour. That's fine.

Since Outlook opens its data files with exclusive access, it is impossible
to accomplish what you want.
