How do I get winxp file sharing to work?

My network consisted of destop and two wirelessly connected laptops all
running winxp pro. File sharing worked fine, with all computers being able to
see all the drives of all the other computers.

Today I added another wirelessly connected laptop (IBM ThinkPad) to my
network using the same workgroup name (simple file sharing). The ThinkPad can
now see all the other drives on the other 3 computers.

From explorer on the other computers, I go to Entire Network, then Microsoft
Windows Network, then my workgroup name, and I see all the computers on the
network including the new ThinkPad. However when I click on it I get the
error message:

\\ThinkPad is not accessible. You might not have persmission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions. The remote server has been paused or is in the
process of being started.

I made sure that File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks was
enabled, and I had set the root directory of the c drive as sharable with
write access and even set one of the subdirectories as sharable as well just
to make sure it wasn't a problem with the root directory.

I even tried adding the protocol "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible
Transport Protocol" since I saw a tip that suggested it, to no avail.
Explorer still gives the same frustrating error message.

Since the error message mentioned a paused process, I ran "what's running"
on the thinkpad and all the processes (including the svchose.exe processes)
look reasonable to me. I've also uninstalled the virus protection software,
again to no avail.

I don't know if it is relevent, but I can ping the ThinkPad from the other
computers no problem (using its network address), and of course the ThinkPad
can also ping the other computers in the network.

I'm completely out of ideas. Does anybody have any ideas for me. If so it
would be much appreciated, as I've already wasted 5 hours working on this
problem.

Oh and I forgot to mention, I turned off the microsoft firewall on the
thinkpad just to make sure that wasn't the problem. It wasn't. Same error
message of course.

Please start by removing IXP/SPX. For best results you need to use just one
protocol.

Yes, I think so, Chuck.

Ok, I checked that and indeed it was "Paused"! (Why?)
I clicked "resume" and instantly the file sharing worked.
Great news, except it looks like I have to run services.msc every
time I start the thinkpad - not so convenient.

Any way around that?

By the way, the details from services.msc on the paused service:

Startup type: Automatic

Looks like you are correct. I deleted the NWLink protocol.

Please start by removing IXP/SPX. For best results you need to use just one

protocol.

I don't see anything called IPX/SPX so I don't think I ever had that.

At the moment NONE. (They seem to cause more problems than they solve?

It's not normal for the Server service to be paused. Setting the
recovery conditions to "Restart the Service" might help.

There were some error messages in there although I am at a loss to know if
they are relevant to this problem, nor how to fix the problems causing these
messages. Here are the errors reported:

There were some error messages in there although I am at a loss to know if
they are relevant to this problem, nor how to fix the problems causing these
messages. Here are the errors reported:

I don't know. But I've heard of strange networking problems that are
related to the Cisco VPN client. If it's installed, un-install it and

I've been trying to network a ThinkpadX41 with WinXP tablet ed SP2 via workgroup/wireless with a Dell380 workstation w/ WinXP Pro SP2 using simple file sharing [because Briefcase only works w/ simple file sharing]. I can access the Dell's shared files from the Thinkpad via My Network Places and the Thinkpad shows up in the Dell's My Network Places, but clicking on the thinkpad icon I get "access denied".[clicking on the thinkpad icon in My Network Places on the thinkpad itself also got me "access denied"] I've done the Network Setup Wizard on the Dell creating a disc I then used on the Thinkpad and then did it the other way around. I checked firewalls settings on the Thinkpad, even turned them off, no change. Server Service was "started" on Thinkpad [set to automatic]. I enabled NTBios over TCP/IP on both computers, altho NTBios is supposed to be a security risk and WinXP is supposed to work w/ just the IP/TCP protocol.
I then tried run > \\ComputerName\Sharename to get from the Dell to the Thinkpad and got a "not enough server storage" message. I then edited the registry on the thinkpad to add an IRPStackSize value under lanmanager and set it at 15, then 18. [I have Symantec on both computers, and Symantec antivirus can apparently require increasing IRPStackSize].

At value=18 I was able to access the thinkpad's shared documents from the Dell using the run > \\ComputerName\Sharename command but I still can't access the thinkpad via My Network Places -"no access".
I'm wondering if there is some username/PW or other permission issue that the thinkpad has w/ simple file sharing [and that the Dell computer does not] that is bypassed by the run command. Maybe the thinkpad doesn't really "do" simple file sharing. I haven't come across any specific known thinkpad file sharing problems googling tho.
