HOW do i get this mic to work???

I would really appreciate some help. I am trying to get a
mic to work on my computer.. i plugged it in..and
rebooted.. tried to install..(dont have any software to
use) but it just wont work.. I dont know why. Please help me.

Doubleclick volume in system tray..untick mute on mic. If no mic, click
options, properties, then put a check on mic.
