How do I get the merge button on the tool bar undimmed?

I have a large spread sheet that all of a sudden will not let me merge cells. The merge button on the tool bar is "dimmed" I have previously been able to merge cells in the work sheets, but I can no longer merge or unmerge cells. What has happened. I have copied and renamed the file and still no luck. I have also tried the reset option
