Sorry Carey I have to call you on this one. Where do you
get off telling anyone that an issue does not belong in
the "New Users" NG. This is exactly the sort of issue a
new user would like to find out about.
In order to determine your settings and how to configure
your microphone for XP go into control panel\sounds and
audio devices\voice tab and then click the test hardware
after you have selected a Voice Recording-Default device
from the drop down list. Please notice Carey that this is
in XP and is something a "New User" may not know about or
know how to find. Keep smiling.

If you show the speaker icon in your system tray double click on it. If it
is not there, click Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control.
This will open the volume control for PLAYBACK. To go to the Recording
section click Options and then Properties. In the properties menu click the
button next to Recording. This will display "Show the following volume
controls" for recording. Make sure Microphone is one of the checked items.
Click OK. Make sure the Microphone's Select box has a check in it. (This
controls the source of input to the sound card.) Also make sure that the
Volume slider is at least half way up the scale.

Click OK. Now click Options/Properties again. Click Playback button and
OK. Make sure Microphone does NOT have a checkmark in Mute and that the
slide control is about half way up the scale. If your microphone is too
close to the speakers once it starts to work, you may get feedback so be
careful. If the volume is low with all sliders set to maximum, you may need
to set the boost to on. If there is an advanced button below the Microphone
slider, click it and make sure there is a check in MIC Boost.

If this does not fix your problem, of course, make sure the microphone is
plugged into the mic connector on the computer and not the line-in
connector. Also this will not work if your sound card is not properly
installed and won't work with other sounds.
