Hi all,

Since installing Photoshop Elements 3, I find that it has commandeered the
usb sockets and opens everytime I plug anything in that has pictures on it.
This occurs even though I have 'file types' set to open jpg files with
picture and fax viewer.

Can't find any settings for this in the Adobe pain in the arse, help files
or 'properties', and don't know exactly which files are responsible for the
commandeering.

PE3 takes for ever to load, and I generally find all I need in ms Photo
Editor, or just plain Windows Explorer anyway, so how do I turn it off and
reserve it for the rare occasion when I need to do some layering?

Cheers,

Something to try...

Go to...My Computer...

Right click the icon for the drive in
question. For example...a card
reader may be listed as:
Removable Disk (E:)
(if you have a multi-card reader
you may have several...E, F, G, etc)

Choose....Properties / Autoplay tab.

Open the Content Type drop window
and choose Pictures.

Left click the "Restore Defaults" button / Apply / OK.

Thanks John,

Though I had forgotten this was where there were more settings, whatever one
sets the drive to in My Computer/Properties, Adobe buts in before any other
action you select gets started. It is very annoying, because it starts so
quick but then takes some time to cancel.

Any more ideas anyone?

Regards,

Steve

Steve, In PE 4 the command Edit / Preferences / Camera or Cardreader gives
the option to import pictures yes or no. In PE3 there may be something
similar.
Probably PE loads at the start a program that kicks in when pictures can be
imported. With a free program like WinPatrol you can see whether this is the
case and disable it.
Did you know that Adobe has a Newsgroup on PE3?

Good luck, Hans.

Thanks very much for your ideas Hans and John,

Yes Hans, I had used the Adobe group once before, but could not find how to
get into it again as I had lost my signing in details. Using Google to
search groups for it I found, instead, this microsoft.public one which
seemed much better as I already had an account set up, so just had to add
the extra group.

In the end I used 'StartupTracker', which told me there were two extra
services running: 'AdobeActiveFileMonitor' and
'PhotoshopElementsDeviceConnect'

In ComputerManagement, I reset the properties of these to manual and turned
them off.

Seems to be ok - for this session at least - now. Not sure whether I will
also need to do this for other users: presumably yes.

Also the useful thing about these groups is that whilst looking for this I
also found out about 'ProcessExplorer' which is another handy improvement on
the normal TaskManager panel.

So cheers to all,

Steve_H

And now, still dithering in this group, I found GadwinPrintScreen too - v
good, so it was well worth the visit!

Cheers
