When I choose New email and click on "To:" no names appear but a msg saying
that the Address list could not be sidplayed. I have about 100 contacts.
Thanks, Tom

Post your Outlook version.
Configure your Outlook Address Book correctly.

It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose track" of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or operating system. Use the following steps to reset
the connection. Note that in some instances you may actually have to remove
the Outlook Address Book completely from your Profile, close Outlook, and
then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book checked?
If this is grayed out...Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change
existing directories or address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present?
If it isn't listed, add it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed,
then remove it and close then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add
it.

does
not allow copy and pasting, so here is the first sentence of the error

Removing the old addressbook was the key...Thank you. Still don't know how
the contact made it into the new addressbook when I restarted Outlook. But I
do know that there were only two names to select from in "Show Names from
the:" dialog box. One was Outlook Address Book (which was empty) and the
other Contacts. When I click on Contacts, all of my contact from the Contact
file appeared...at first in alphabetical order by first names and not
last...It took a little tweaking to find the right place to change to last
names...Forgot how I got there...but all problems solved...Thanks

Russ, several weeks ago you helped me get my contacts into my
addressbook…remember? It was successful. Addressbook names are listed
lastname first.

Only later did I realize that in so doing, some switch got turned off or on.
Now, all of the names in the Contacts directory are filed by “first†names
and not “last,â€. I have J., Jane, several Johns etc. The only exceptions
are the names that I have added since this switch took place. In other
words, if I go to Contacts and add a new name, it will appear correctly in
the contacts list, that is, last name first…while all of the others are
listed first name first. I thought of going through my entire list and
revising each name so that they would appear correctly. BUT, to my
amazement, even if I make the correction to “File as†and “Display as†the
change does not take place once I Save and Close. Is that weird or what?
Any suggestions?

I am appending this email to the thread in the newsgroup for others to read.
Thanks, Tom

I don't understand your question. When did Phone List view enter into this
picture? You were asking about the Outlook Address Book.
Clearly you will see that you have only 2 choices for sorting the Outlook
Address Book:
1. First, Last
2. File As
For the latter, if your File As fields are sorted by Last, First, then your
Outlook Address Book will be sorted by Last, First. If they are not, then
your Outlook Address Book will be sorted by whatever format you have
designated.

Always remember to restart Outlook to see any changes you make.

When you got to Contacts/View/Curent View, there is a drop down list that

Just clarify your question.
Did you intend to change subjects completely from the Outlook Address
Book to the various views of the Contacts Folders? There are infinite
ways to customize the views of your Contacts Folders that are readily
apparent in the "Customize Current View..." dialog.

Actually the one IS related to the other. The event that caused the names to
un-arrange themselves in the first place was getting the names from the
contacts list into the addressbook. It worked, but as a result, or the next
time I accessed Contracts, the names had unarranged themselves. Could one be
related to the other?

There is no combination of settings or values in all of the various options
that has worked in restoring the arrangement of Last, First. Yet, why should
it be correct in the first two types of views, that is, Address and Detailed
Address. But in Phone list view, they are arranged first name first.

I would love to send a chunk of file to you for you to see what I am dealing
with. But I wouldn't know how to do it. I even exported the Outlook
Contacts file to Outlook Express; and to my amazement, it appeared correctly,
the way I had originally, Last Name First. Go figure....

Setting the sort order of the Outlook Address Book has no effect
whatsoever on the fields in the Contacts Folder. Something else did that.
List views are very easy to sort just by clicking on the column headers.
