How do I get a single column list back?

A long time ago I was able to do some sort of tweak
so when I had to open a file list it looked exactly like
my Windows Explorer and everything was in one long
column.

Having to do a repair install and numerous updates after
that, I no longer have that. Instead I have multiple columns
which require a horizontal slider bar...unacceptable.

Since that was a long ago, I don't remember how to do that.

Can anyone help with advice or point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

I don't know what you mean by "looked exactly like my Windows Explorer".
Windows Explorer is the graphical user interface so if you are asking this
question about some program, we need to know the name of the program.

If you are really talking about making Explorer windows look the way you
want, open a window - for ex. double-click My Documents. Arrange things the
way you want by clicking on the View menu. You probably want "List". Click
on the Toolbars entry and choose what toolbars you want to display, etc.
When the arrangement is to your liking, click on the Tools option in the
Menu and choose Folder Options>View tab. You'll see a button you can click
to set all windows the way this one is. Click it, OK the confirmation box
that pops up, Apply/OK out.

Don't Panic!

What I was trying to convey is that W.E. shows everything in a single
column using Detail view. Let's say I open Notepad. And then I choose
'open.' Let's say in the folder there are 45 items. At that point, there
is a column of 15 items. The next to that column, on the right, is another
column of 15 items and then another.

What I wish to do is have all 45 items in one single column where I can
scroll up and down vertically vs. scrolling across horizontally.

I have many programs where I have to select or import data from a list
and while I can change to detail view to make it a single column it never
"sticks" so the next time I open that list it has reverted to the previous
horizontal listing.

Have a fix? One that will work for any program that has to 'open'
something?

Thanks.

AFAIK you have to set views within programs from within the programs
themselves. I know of no way to globally change views for different
programs in Windows.

If you think you managed to do this before, maybe taking a look at some of
MVP Kelly Theriot's fixes/utilities would help.

Sorry I was unable to help you with this.

With Windows Explorer open, click on View, and select Details. Does that
line all your ducks back up in a single column?

No, it doesn't. Wish it did. I tried that angle from WE, My
Documents, etc. Everything I have read says it is supposed
to.

Been to many Websites looking for a utility or advice (reg hack?)
and nothing seems to work. Well, not exactly true. There is a
program called "File-Ex" that gives me what I want. Problem
is (aside from cost) is that with all the radio buttons on it
another user might really screw something up. If I could lock
those buttons (grey them out), I'd buy it.

But if that works, and it does, what can I do that File-Ex does?

I misunderstood your original question. I played around with a few of my
programs and each time I selected Open, I get the dialog box you
describe, the filenames are in multiple lines and I use my scroll mouse
to scroll sideways. I don't know how to put them into a single column.
