The format cell does not alllow for parenthesis around negative numbers with
decimal places? How can I set this up?

Hi John

click on the cell
choose format / cell
under CUSTOM
type
#,##0.00;[Red](#,##0.00)

this should give you what you want.

Hi JoAnn

not on my system (comes up with a - sign in front of the $ sign), i'm
guessing it probably has something to do with regional settings.

I think so, too.

Windows start button|control panel
regional and language options
regional options tab
click the customize button
currency tab
change the negative currency format to show ()'s.

I can go in and tell it no symbol in front. Are you using Excel 2003?

I didn't think that it's the currency symbol.

I think it's how negative numbers show up in the currency sample listbox--either
surrounded by ()'s or with leading -'s.

Copy and paste this in the FORMAT CELL in the CUSTOM BOX:
#,##0_);[Red]-(#,##0.00), this was the results only in "RED"
-(5,678.00)
Just remove the [RED] if you do not want the number in red.

Yep. A custom format will work.

But I think the question evolved into why the parentheses don't show up in the
Negative number list box under the currency category of Format|Cells|Number tab.
