how do i format a blank cd (cd-r)?

i just got a new computer (home made). how do i format a blank cd (cd-r)?
these are sony cd's. i've heard different stories that i do and don't have
to format cd's to use them. currently, when i put a blank cd in there, it
gives me an error message that the "d drive is not accessable. incorrect
function"

but when i a put kids game cd in there, everything is fine.

what gives? we are trying to do backups on cd's and save all of our floppy
disks on cd from now (and never use floppys again).

You do not have to format them unless you are using "packet Writing"
software. Are you sure the drive you are putting them is burner and not just
a rom? Also are you using Windows XP?

yes, we are using windows xp.

it's a combo type drive (cd, dvd, etc).

You cant format a CD-R. The reason you are getting the error is because you are
trrying to explore a blank CD and recording is not enabled on the drive. Do this :
Right click Drive icon in My computer
Properties
Recording tab
Tick "Enable Recording"
CLick OK

You cant format a CD-R. The reason you are getting the error is because you are

Right click Drive icon in My computer
Properties
Recording tab
Tick "Enable Recording"
CLick OK

Maybe this is what you are missing. Open My Computer and then right-click on
your DVD Drive and choose Properties.

Then most likely you don't have a drive that can burn CD's or DVD's..

yes, we are using windows xp.

it's a combo type drive (cd, dvd, etc).

That does NOT mean it can *burn* CDs or DVDs. You will need to check if
the brand and model of drive that you have can actually BURN to this
media.
