How do I force Word not to encode embedded textual tags?

I have a Word document with tags in the form of [name1]. Basically, a
textual id enclosed in square brackets. A 3rd-party program replaces the
tags with other textual data. The 3rd-party programs requires the a Word
document printed to an HP4 printer output file. I have no problem generating
this file. The problem is that when the printer output file is created most
of the tags are encoded. I should be able to open the printer output file
from a text editor and see all tags among the printer codes. How can I
generate this output file using Word and be guaranteed that all the tags have
not been encoded, but in their original textual form of [name1]? Does Word
have any special format or command that will not encode the tags. TIA, Gary.

This 'encoding' you refer to is entirely a function of your printer driver.
Word doesn't selectively replace your text with something else. You could
print to a generic text printer to create a plain text output; or simply
save yo file as plain text; or not use Word at all, since it seems
inappropriate for your current purposes.
