how do I find my lost emails from a hd backup?

I keep a regular basic backup of my hard drive. Due to an error I can no
longer access my old computer, and therefore only have a backup on an
external hard drive. I thought I should be able to install Outlook on a new
system and simply search for the correct file on the drive and copy it over,
but it seems it's not there! I've been looking for a .pst file... Is there
anything else I should be looking for? I also had 3 separate profiles - I've
found .xml files that bare the names of these perofiles. Should I import
them in some way, or just copy to a relevant folder?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - but PLEASE no replies saying I'm a
dope for not doing an export from Outlook. I didn't realise it was necessary
as older versions didn't have this problem (I'm now using 2003) I know what
I've done wrong, I just need help putting it right. The data exists on my
backup, I just need to know how to find and access it!

Thanks in advance.... I'm pretty desperate here as it contains quite a bit
of important work.

Cheers,

Phil.

If you're not using an Exchange Server mailbox then your data should be in a
PST file. Have you found any? You mention that you're looking for them but
didn't mention if you found any

Vince,

No I didn't find any .pst files on my backup. Is it possible to be using an
exchange server on a single computer...? :O/

Not off the top of my head. If there were no PST files on your backup and
you're using Outlook then most likely you're out of luck. There's a real
long shot that you were connecting to an Exchange Server and you might have
offline folders in which case you'd have an OST file somewhere.
