I am having trouble with my system.... I'm pretty sure I
have some sort of virus. I need a copy of
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. or at least thats what
my computer tells me needs repairs as it is corrupt or
missing. Anyone have any ideas??? PLEASE any sort of help
would be greatly appreciated. (p.s. I would use the XP Pro
cd to boot if I had it)

Hi, Jordan.

The KB article 823614, which Carey gave you the link for, is "currently not
available". Apparently, MS is revising/updating it.

In the meantime, I can tell you that the \config\system file is a
significant part of the WinXP Registry and WinXP can't run without it.
There should be a copy of it in \Windows\Repair, but that is probably a much
earlier version that does not include most of your installed applications.
(My System file is over 6 MB; the version in the Repair folder is less than
3 GB and is date 9/16/03, when I last installed WinXP.) Naturally, somebody
else's System file would do you no good at all.

Perhaps this article will help you understand the problem, but I hope you
don't have to do all of this:

Thanks, Bob.

Yes, now I remember why that article is being revised. The key line, in
instruction 5, should be 3 lines. There should be carriage returns before
REN and COPY.

But, Jordan, be sure to read this article 823614 in conjunction with article
307545.
