Created master category list in outlook 2000 on "old machine" - want to be
able to import the SAME master list into outlook 2003 on "new machine"

Diane - Your reference was helpful. Did not realize that the master category
list is not a separate file, but rather a part of the registry.

Your comment about it not being the same format in the two versions of
Outlook is not clear to me though .... given that the reference indicates
"need to change the version number in the key before importing". Is format an
additional issue or are you just saying the same thing?

Thanks!

The 2000 version uses plain text to list the categories - the 2003 version
is Unicode. Try changing the version # before importing and see if it works-
the worst that will happen is it doesn't work - it shouldn't affect the
usability of the computer and you can always delete the key.

I think that rather than experiment to see whether it works or not, it may be
faster to just manually "re-enter" the categories I have added over time to
the "old" master categories list. Assuming I do that, the categories included
on my imported "old" contacts, tasks, etc. should now be recognized as being

Yes - if they are on a contact and you add it to the master list, the ones
on the contact are recognized as being on the master list.
