I'm having the same problem lately with PowerPoint 2003 *and* PowerPoint 2002.
Hardware acceleration is off. I haven't been able to pin down what's causing
it, but I do see a pattern. The slides are static with no animation, no
multimedia, no transitions. End with Black Screen is turned off. I'm getting
just a totally black screen without the end show message. In my case it
doesn't require multiple clicks - - just patience and eventually the black
screen goes away and focus returns to Normal mode. I have dual monitors, but it
happens on either monitor.
Using dual monitors with PowerPoint open on the secondary monitor and the
presentation set to play on the primary monitor I can watch what is happening.
It doesn't happen the first time I play a presentation. On the second playing
and all subsequent playings it happens. I think the time is being used to catch
up the Normal view screen so that when the black screen goes away, the thumbnail
of the last viewed slide is selected in Normal view. The first time I play the
presentation, the thumbnail of the currently displayed slide is highlighted in
Normal view. In other words, first time through the two screens are in synch.
Second time through the Normal view screen doesn't get synched up until Escape
is pressed, and while that's happening the presentation screen is black.
It's possibly a resource issue. I plan to keep poking at it.
