How do I email to email addresses out of the office?

Our office has .net at the end of all of our work emails. If I want to email
to someone outside of the office (for example, someone with a .com) it won't
let me. How do I change the settings so that I can email outside of the
office?
 
What happens when you try? Have you checked with the mail administrator if
they've setup anything that could be getting in the way?
