I want to either edit out commercials, or figure out how to burn a 2 1/2 hour
movie on a 2 hour DVD?

I would like the ability to edit the recorded movie to edit out commercials.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Marti

You could convert from DVD mpeg2 to an AVI using VirtualDub, edit it,
then re-author the DVD... or get an mpeg2 editor. (Mpeg2 is hard to
edit cause of keyframes and inter/intra frame compressing.) Google on
it.

You need to buy a software package that enables you to do that. I believe Cyber
Link Power Director 3 may help - but I have not used it myself yet (entirely).
It claims to do these things :-

PowerDirector 3 is a major upgrade version of PowerDirector. CyberLink has
renovated the entire feature set to improve its functionality and redesigned
its interface to be even more friendly and flexible for every home video
producer.

The major new features of PowerDirector 3 include:

New video file format support:
Windows Media Video 9 (WMV) input support
QuickTime 6 input & output support
DivX 5 codec included to input & output MPEG4 video (Retail version only)
New Capturing and Editing Interface:
Timeline/ Storyboard dual-mode editing
6 editing tracks: Video, Video Effect, PiP, Title, Voice, Music
Dynamic scaling timeline ruler and interface supports all screen resolution
larger than 1024x768
Better Library Management Tools:
Create alias for video, audio, and image files for easier remembering of
media assets
New Capturing Features:
Automatically detect available device and list on control panel for users’
choice
DV QuickScan feature allows previewing a whole DV tape in 6 minutes. Users
need only to select the desired video intervals and the program will rewind
to the marked intervals to execute the high quality capturing
New Editing Features:
Exclusive fast forward preview allows 2x-16x of fast previewing to find the
desired video segment to do editing
"PreciseCut" dual trimmer bar allowing quick and precise trimming for
long-hour video editing
Large screen media viewer and media editor allows better visibility when
previewing or editing video
New speed tool changes video playback speed without changing audio pitched.
Great for video files containing music background. Automatically calculates
the speed range needed to fit exact time length of the new video file
Store favorite video effect, title animation and transition in the
“Favorite†subset for later use
New Title Designer adds splendid text title by adding shadow on title text
and applying gradient colors on text face and shadow. New title safe zone
allows masked, partial title animation
New PiP Designer adds fancy picture-in-picture visual by applying motion
effects and adding PiP border and shadow
3-track, real-time audio mixer let users adjust track volume in real-time
when watching video playback
Voice over recorder allows users narrate voice when watching video. The
recorded voice will be automatically synchronized with the video
New Production Feature:
Enhanced rendering engine utilizes the new MPEG encoder/decoder to improve
the video quality and encoding performance
Optimized with AMD 3DNow, Intel MMX, SSE, SSE2, and the newest
HyperThreading technology
Auto-detection of TV format: automatically detect whether the video is
interlace or progressive to ensure best viewing quality on TV or DVD
New Smart Video Rendering Technology 2 improves the patented SVRT further by
separating the rendering judgment between video and audio. A movie clip with
alter audio will only need to render the audio again, so that users can save
even more time with SVRT2
Estimate the file size to be produced when choosing different file producing
profiles for better disk volume control.

I use Windows Media Player 10 - so I probably need an up-grade - but I think
it's
something along those lines. Cyber Link do many other packages as well.
And if somebody can get back to me on my question that would help too !!!

For the media center, the best encoder I have found for being able to delete
whatever you don't want and to make large files smaller is the Video Encoder
Xpress put out by TMGP inc. If has a 72 page book that comes with it, it
also has filters that can inprove DVDs that you made with old VCR tapes or
whatever you need to fix. You can try it for 14 days for free from
download.com

And the makers wesite is:
