how do i do a system restore

I currently was infested with some virus threats, and in the process of removing them i deleted a file known as bsst5. I think that is the name, anyway its a file that windows xp uses. Now it is gone. What im trying to do is restore my computer to a earlier date when the file was there but im not sure how. Any information would be appreciated in this matter thank you Jason.

To do a system restore click start, programs, accessories, system tools and select restore. Since you had a virus this operation may not work. If it does not try this: Reboot your system , when system first starts to boot start tapping the F8 key until the windows advanced option screen comes up. go to help and support right in your own PC...type in "system restore"...and
just read and follow the instructions..
now that wasn't that tough was it...and by reading...you learned

You have good advice but your tone sounds a little
condescending, considering this is the newsgroup for
new users.

The gentleman stated the details of the problem for a reason--the question
isn't simply how to do a system restore, but whether that's the most
efficient remedy; or even an effective fix.

System Restore backs up the system state, which essentially means the
registry. I don't know what this bsst5 file is, but since "key" isn't its
suffix, it would appear to be part of Windows and not the Windows
registry. In any event, in making a recommendation, that issue has to be
addressed.

If it isn't a registry key, but a part of Windows proper, that was
deleted, the remedy is a repair of Windows from the CD, not a system
restore from the internal "snapshot" of the registry.

Jason, be careful. If you receive a message about a "missing file"
immediately after cleaning a virus, it's very possible that the file was a
part of the virus. Visit the website for your antivirus program and look up
the viruses that it identified. The info sheet will have manual removal
directions. Walk through those directions to double check that the
antivirus program cleaned up all remnants.
