I have received a Powerpoint presentation with embedded music. I would like
to change the music, but the originator has hidden the icon. Is there a way
to display the icon once it has been hidden?

Depends how the icon has been hidden!

The sound icon is a picture and its possible to size it to zero or set the
brightness so high it doesnt show. Or it can simply be dragged out of sight
off slide.

Try view slide at 25%, select an item and then press tab repeatedly to see
if you can find it. Even if its "invisible" the sizing handles will show.

A second option is that its been inserted as a transition sound . Go to the
slide it starts on and in the slide transition pane look at the "sounds" box.
If its there scroll down to other sound and insert your own sound

You could try this:
Save the PPT file as a Web Page (.html file). This will extract the
wav files out of the PPT into the directory you saved to. Then you can
re-link the wav files back into the presentation however you'd like.
I'm not sure this will work with MP3 files though.

Good luck.

Thank you for your prompt responses. The sound could well have been mp3 and
as such, I could not extract it by saving as a web page. Also, I tried
reducing the slide size and 'tabbing' through the selections - no luck I'm
afraid. However, the slide transition sound option worked perfectly.
