Frustrated in Wisconsin

Back in the good old days, I could make items on an animated slide "dim" when
the next item appeared. I can't find anything like this under animation or
even custom animation, and searching in help for "dim" yields nothing. Does
anyone know if this is still possible? If so, how the heck is it done?

Dear Frustrated

and what version of powerpoint would you like to do this with?
