You may think this sounds simple, but belive you me, it aint. I tried just
regularly deleting it, it said that "waveiis.dll cannot be deleted because it
is being used by another program, close any programs that might be using it
and try again." Well, when i scanned it with my software, it said there was
a trojan on it, then when i scanned it with norton, it said there was a
quote" adaware.adpopup" When i used ad-aware SE personal, it dected a
malware, then my computer just shutdown, a blue screen poped up saying some
hibberish jibberish. When i booted up my computer again, it said that
winlogon.exe enountered a problem and needed to close, would you like to send
an error report to dell. Well, after that, i tried booting up my comp in
safe mode, to eliminate most of the programs that are running, i did that and
tried to delete it, same thing still happened. I need someone's help to
either how do i delete this, or get the viruses off of it. Oh and is the
waveiis.dll important, cause if it is, i got a backup file i could make to
keep the file itself.

I hate to say this, but I don't really trust anyone that calls a cheap
NAT router a firewall that is really beautiful.

"I bought a hardware firewall (first a Netgear RO318, now a DLINK DI604
(a truly sweet piece of hardware btw))."

Neither device is a firewall, just a simple NAT Router. A firewall that
would have protected him from external sources would be more like the
cheap DFL-700 unit that can remove content from http sessions (by name,
extension, etc..), block lists by strings, etc....

Wipe and install is your only option.

Maybe in the future you will keep your antivirus app up to date, and I
highly suggest you do not visit the sites that infected you (you probably
have some type of P2P installed...the most common vector for the viruses you
cited).

If you have a serious infection, you can spend days or weeks repairing it.
You could try starting the Recovery Console and deleting this file, but
chances are it'll be back when its 'healer' notices it is gone.

You need to use some high quality removal tools in order to have any
hope of cleaning up your system. Norton is not in this category.
AdAware is good, but by itself cannot be expected to do the whole job.

Start by booting your computer into "safe mode with networking" and
then go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do their free online
scan.

And if this also results in a blue screen error message then please
please please make note of the contents of the error message and post
that information back here. The blue screen information is not
"hibberish jibberish". It is detailed technical information regarding
the problem that produced the blue screen and that information is
essential if you want assistance with this problem.

If housecall cannot clean the system then there are some additional
items you can try, including downloading and installing the free Beta
version of Windows Defender from http://download.microsoft.com or
other online scanning sites such as:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

And if these sites do detect the file and ask you what to do with it,
choose the "delete" option. waveiis.dll is not a Windows component
file and it is not associated with any commercial software package
insofar as I can discover.

If these suggestions cannot fix the problem, or if you consider them
too onerous to attempt then the only other alternative is to do a
clean reinstall of your Windows.

Good luck

A virus attack mandates a complete "clean install".

Rubbish. Are you declaring darkness as the new standard, i.e.
acknowledging that XP's maintainability has become so useless that
systems have to be trashed every time a "virus" is expected?
Why? Read the following:

Feel my anger, then! This dude doesn't sound like he has any hands-on
with these situations, or is so used to being in a network-orientated
environment where "just" wipe is the knee-jerk response to any blip,
that he hasn't a CLUE as to what we deal with out here.

Tell me; if you had your entire IT infrastructure on one PC, with an
ad-hoc collection of software and data scattered all over the place (a
la MS duhfault locations), would you be so quicvk to "just" wipe?

An irrelevant link, given this debates clean install vs. over-old
upgrade in the context of upgrading an OS (third and best option is to
not upgrade the OS).

It's not as easy to manage active malware as it should be, because MS
have been asleep at the wheel, provinding no maintenance OS that can
run without running infected code off the HD.

Nevertheless, being able to manage systems from outside the HD-based
OS has been a standard facility since DOS, through Win9x, and into NT
(as long as you avoid NTFS).

It's still possible, no thanks to MS: Google( Bart PE )

Running Windows-based av to kill active malware is like striking
a match to see if what you are standing in is water or petrol.

guess what, i'm gonna address your question!

you want to know how to delete a file. that windows says is being used
tby another process.

There was a document on eldergeek that explained it but I can't find
it.

You could try deleting ti from Safe Mode.
Another way..

Open a command prompt window
Now End Task Explorer.exe
(only the command prompt will be visible)
now delete it from the command prompt
now it's deleted
Then do CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then file..new task..explorer.exe <ENTER>
and you're back into windows properly.

If it couldn't delete it, download sysinternals process explorer, and
in the menu there there's a "find handle" option. I think you can type
the name of the file (maybe the file you wnat to delete, or maybe the
dll file that is locking it) And it'll tell you the EXE to close(to
end task) that will enable you to delete the file.

Rubbish. Are you declaring darkness as the new standard,

big deal. He offered 1 solution. it's a good solution. Any fool reading
it should realise there are different solutions to a problem, give
people reading some credit.

he is under no obligation to think of or write every solution and it's
a matter of opinion which solution is best. If he thinks a clean
install is best, I wouldn't disagree. It often is best.*it works* !
Of course, he needs to have data in 1 location (within 1 directory, /
subdirs of it) and all the installations for his programs nicely stored
for it to work. But GOOD. So if he doesn't have that, then he should
do that.

there's another solution, run a virus checker and remove the virus and
maybe do a win xp repair if it causes problems.

Just add your solutions.

"I bought a hardware firewall (first a Netgear RO318, now a DLINK DI604

but it has a firewall built in there. About as effective as many
windows software firewalls/PFWs.

I agree though, it's not what one would call a hardware firewall. It's
a standard 'home router'.
Neither device is a firewall, just a simple NAT Router. A firewall that
would have protected him from external sources would be more like the
cheap DFL-700 unit that can remove content from http sessions (by name,

that's more of a serious firewall. But a basic firewall function built
into a combination box, just like most windows software ones, don't do
any of that. The box is a NAT device, a Router, and a firewall.
What else do you call being able to selectively block outgoing
connections.
A crummy firewall perhaps, but a firewall it is too.

Of course, I would call it a 'home router' not a firewall .I understand
that in networking circles, when you say 'firewall' or 'router' you
imply a certain level of sophistication. But it's problematic to say
It's Not a firewall or not a router.

Some people say that DOS or Windows isn't an operating system 'cos they
lack technical sophisication. A crummy OS is still an OS.
