When I open one particular workbook I get two copies labeled [workbook
name]:1 and [workbook name]:2. Whwn I make changes to one, the second one is
also updated. How do I delete one of the these versions of the same workbook?

This will have been set up with two windows open to the same file. You
can just close one window (using the X in the top right corner of the
file window, NOT the Excel window), and then save the file. Next time
you open it there will only be one window to the file.

Hope this helps.

They are not versions of the same workbook, just two windows.

Close one of the windows and save the workbook.

You get these in the first place from going to Window>New Window

Select the window you don't want and hit ctrl-w to close it.

Then save your workbook--or you'll have to do it again the next time you open
it.
